Israel’s Independence Day at Rutgers

Hundreds of students gathered at the IsraelFest Mega Celebration last Thursday to celebrate 64 years of independence for the state of Israel.  The festival took place on Yom Ha'atzmaut, Israel’s Independence Day.  The event, sponsored by the Rutgers Hillel Center for Israel Engagement, featured tables representing different cities and places in Israel. A popular table was the Tel Aviv table, at which students got a taste of life on the beach and sipped a variety of juice drinks. The Tzfat table also attracted many students and they made snacks with warm flat bread, oil, zatar and other toppings.  The bread represented a type of homemade bread that Druze people make in Israel. The Dead Sea table featured samples of Dead Sea skin care products and the Shuk (marketplace) table had baskets full of nuts, dried fruit, falafel and other foods.

Students crowded the barbeque table and kept coming for the duration of the all-day event.  Hot dogs and hamburgers were served to a diverse line of hungry students.  The event was full of giveaways.  By the end of the day, most students in the area were proudly wearing Yom Ha'atzmaut shirts, illustrated with a student-designed logo and the words “Celebrating 64 Years of Democracy.”  Other giveaways included water bottles, drawstring bags and sunglasses.

The event took place on Thursday, April 26 on Morrel Street.
