Palestinian Media Watch at Rutgers Hillel

The Israel Chair at Rutgers Hillel together with Stand With Us brought Itamar Marcus of Palestinian Media Watch to talk at Rutgers University. Palestinian Media Watch (PMW) is an Israel-based media watchdog organization, PMW monitors Palestinian Arabic media and schoolbooks for xenofobia.

In his presentation, Mr. Marcus spoke about the contradictions between the image the Palestinians present to the world in English and the messages to their own people in Arabic. For example, the Canadian government asked a Palestinian diplomat, Linda Sobeh Ali, to leave Canada because of a tweet that included a link to a video that calls to "destroy the Jews."

Itamar, rightfully so, sees this double talk as an obstacle to peace. If the Palestinian media keeps up this dehumanization of Israelis and Jews then no real peace will occur between Israelis and Palestine.

One participant on the crowed mentioned the Israeli TV show Arab Labor created by Sayed Kashua. “Arab Labor” is a comedy that focuses on the family and work situations of an Israeli Arab who is trying to integrate into Israeli society while maintaining his Arab identity. It is a shame that while Israeli TV humanizes Arabs, Palestinian TV uses the tools of dehumanization for political gains.
